Nigerian music artiste Oluwatosin Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has sparked widespread reactions across social media after claiming he singlehandedly "saved" Afrobeats and drove its global acceptance in 2016.
Speaking during a recent interview with 3Music TV, the Skin Tight hitmaker maintained that his unique entry into the industry breathed fresh life into the genre at a critical juncture.
"I saved Afrobeats in 2016," Mr Eazi stated.
Mr Eazi’s 2016 emergence remains widely celebrated by fans and critics alike, marked by a powerful run of crossover hit singles, a distinctive laid-back vocal delivery, and a fusion style that earned him the coveted Next Rated award at the 2016 Headies.
However, music skeptics have pointed out that the period was also heavily defined by the formidable contributions of other contemporary artistes, including Tekno, Runtown, and Ycee, who collectively dominated the African and diaspora charts to propel the genre's explosive global expansion.
