Music executive and Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy has found himself at the centre of a heated online debate following the launch of the Don Jazzy Tech Scholarship 2027 in partnership with TS Academy.
Unveiled around October 26, 2026, the initiative was heavily publicized as offering eligible applicants up to 100% off tuition fees valued at up to ₦447,000.
The programme spans high-demand tech fields, including AI and automation, data analytics, cybersecurity, software development, digital marketing, and product design.
Additional perks advertised alongside the scheme include 50 free laptops, data assistance for up to 500 selected students, and robust internship and job placement support, with applications scheduled to run until November 30, 2026.
Despite the lucrative incentives, the initiative drew swift backlash on X after users—led by accounts such as @prince_dc21__—pointed out that selected applicants are still required to pay an application or acceptance fee ranging between ₦26,000 and ₦26,500.
Critics argued that labelling the initiative as a "scholarship" is misleading when any financial obligation is attached to successful placement.
Opponents contended that funnelling large volumes of applicants into pre-recorded or structured modules while collecting fees closely mirrors commercial course sales driven by heavy influencer promotion rather than genuine philanthropic educational assistance.
Conversely, supporters have rallied around the music executive, defending the fee as a necessary commitment mechanism to filter out unserious applicants and ensure completion rates.
Proponents also emphasized that even with the fee factored in, beneficiaries still receive a massive discount on the overall instruction cost, arguing that access to structured tech education carries immense value regardless of the nomenclature.
