Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has voiced his frustration over persistent typecasting in the film industry, accusing producers of continually boxing him into wealthy, overbearing "Odogwu" characters.
Speaking during an appearance on The Creativitea Podcast, Arukwe explained that filmmakers frequently hand him identical scripts because they view the archetype as a guaranteed box-office safety net, leaving little room for artistic variety.
"All the producers in Nollywood now want to kill me with Odogwu character. You can’t put me in a box," Arukwe stated.
Urging the creative community to explore his full range, the actor noted that filmmakers should be willing to experiment with fresh character arcs just as past directors took a chance on the breakout roles that initially made him popular.
"The same way someone took a chance on that character, you can also create another character and give to me," he added.
Arukwe’s remarks echo mounting sentiments from viewers and his own management team.
His manager, Mautin Tairu (Mr M), recently agreed with fan criticisms on X
regarding the actor's recurrent "Igbotic" roles and intense delivery style. Responding to a fan who pleaded for a break from the actor's frequent shouting on screen, Tairu admitted to sharing the exact same fatigue.
