Year in Review: Most popular songs of 2022

The Nigerian music industry continues to churn out hit songs that resonate across the globe and this year was no different.

The year continued with the upward trend with significant releases from artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido and Kizz Daniel.

Below, in no particular order are the most popular songs in 2022

1.Kizz Daniel ft Tekno ‘Buga’ (Lo lo lo)

Kizz Daniel's song 'Buga' went viral when it was released.

No doubt Kizz Daniel has grown a reputation for dishing spicy viral hits since his entrance into the music industry.

At some point, 'Buga' was the most Shazamed Song in the world.

Kizz Daniel's masterpiece, Buga topped Apple Music’s top 100 in Nigeria and was among the top 100 on Apple Music in Kenya.

2.Burna Boy ‘Last Last’

The self-acclaimed African Giant and Grammy award-winner, Burna boy seduced his fans with his single ‘Last Last’ which was part of the 19-track album, "Love Damini"

The lyrics of the song hint at Burna's failed relationship with his estranged girlfriend and rapper, Stefflon Don.

3.Pheelz ft BNXN “Finnesse”

Producer turned artiste Pheelz released the music video for his debut track "Finesse" which featured BNXN (formerly known as Buju).

The video was directed by Director K-shot.

4.Asake ft Burna Boy ‘Sungba Remix’

‘Sungba’ is a single off Asake’s new project after he signed to Olamide’s YBNL.

Asake’s sound burst brains and gives unconventional vibes more like a combo of street and Fuji.

‘Sungba’, meaning "Lie Flat" in Yoruba appeals to a vast majority with its sexually suggestive hints.

5.Rema “Calm Down”

In March of this year, Rema, the prince of Nigerian music released his newest album, Rave & Roses.

Rema also dropped the album's lead song "Calm Down" which is a guitar-driven, mid-tempo composition made by London and Andre Vibez.

The singer later remixed the song with Selena Gomez which won the singer numerous nominations.

6.Asake “Joha”

Afrobeat singer and YBNL signee Asake dropped another banger that left fans swooning.

The single 'Joha' cemented his affiliations with indigenous African music.

"Joha" is a record off Asake's album "Mr. Money With The Vibe", the first debut album after the dazzling "Ololade Asake" EP.

7.Burna Boy “It’s Plenty”

'It's plenty' is one song for a party hangout or just for a cruise.

Its Yoruba fusion of 'shale' and popular slang 'trabaye' is a seamless combination of lyrics with finesse.

The track is from his 'Love Damini' album.

8.Asake “Peace Be Unto You (PBUY)”

Asake released 'PBUY' on June 16, 2022.

The song ranked No.1 on Apple music's top 100 some time back.

According to fans on social media, “Peace Be Unto You (PBUY) has a familiar sound to "Palazzo".

The track certainly carries the signature of Asake as it opens with a sound bite of the viral video of a policewoman yelling "help me" as she was being driven to an unidentified location.

9.Mayorkun “Certified Loner (No Competition)”

Mayorkun released "Certified Loner (No Competition)" as his first song of the year.

The song comes at the back of his excellent sophomore album ‘Back in Office’.

The Mayor of Lagos never fails to deliver and this song with its 'amapiano' influence is no exception.

10.Crayon “Ijo (Jo la ba la ba)”

Nigerian singer, Skiibii received massive acceptance when he started the year with his Davido-assisted remix of ‘Baddest Boy’.

TikTok played a big role in the explosive nature of Skibii's music which is described as the song of a party

In February, the released anthem ‘Baddest Boy’ recorded 5 million streams.
