Nigerian music star Adekunle Gold has said Nigeria is not a truly democratic nation, weighing in on why his colleague, Davido, reportedly appealed to United States President Donald Trump to pay close attention to the recently held Osun State governorship election.

Speaking on a recent episode of the One54 Podcast, the "Orente" crooner explained that he believed Davido's outreach to Trump stemmed from the belief that Nigeria doesn't operate as a genuine democracy.

"I think Davido sent that message to Donald Trump because we are not truly practising democracy in Nigeria. We are not doing what a democratic society should do," he said.

Adekunle Gold also expressed hope that the current administration under President Bola Tinubu would improve on the shortcomings of previous governments when it comes to governance and democratic values.

"I just hope this administration does better than the previous one," he said.
