Controversial Nigerian cleric Tobi Adegboyega has ignited widespread reactions online after a viral video showed him describing Christianity as a “social construct” introduced to Africans during colonisation.
In the clip, the pastor argued that Christianity was used as a tool for control, claiming colonial powers presented it as a superior religion while embedding teachings that encouraged submission.
He referenced biblical passages about masters and slaves, alleging they were used to justify oppression and enforce obedience during the colonial era.
Adegboyega further stated that Africans were “tricked into submission” through religion, linking its spread to historical events such as the transatlantic slave trade.
He questioned why many Africans continue to practise what he described as a construct shaped by political and cultural influence rather than purely spiritual origins.
The pastor also criticised rigid church systems, arguing that some doctrines, including strict rules about marriage, are cultural additions rather than direct biblical instructions.
Calling for a “liberated generation,” he encouraged young Africans to prioritise spirituality over religion, urging them to seek knowledge, ask questions, and avoid blind obedience. He added that churches should focus more on transparency, empowerment, and access to leadership.
His remarks have since sparked intense debate across social media, with supporters praising his candour and critics condemning his interpretation of Christian history.

@RodriMCFC____"when you suddenly realize that even this set of pastors in nigeria are quietly acting out a CIA script, you’d realize that the entire christian world needs to sit and have a rethink regarding this religion"
@deminolovathome___"A pastor saying this. What does that mean? Religion na scam?"
@Eaziislife___"The Bible was very okay with slavery… Yeah, digest that"
@biggemglobal___"Tobi is not a pastor, he has never been. He’s using “church” as a platform to gather gullible people. He will unmask himself by himself. It’s just a matter of time."
@Yung_klemzy___"Search through Quran bro. How to marry is boldly written.
How to bury the dead was thought too"
“When the white man came to Africa to introduce his religion and colonize us, he insert ‘slaves obey your masters,’ in his bible to trick us into submission. Christianity is a social construct; it tells us how to marry even though there’s no how to marry in the bible.”
