Governor Hyacinth Alia has said the security situation in Benue State has improved markedly, noting that only three of the state’s 23 local government areas are still dealing with minor security concerns.
The governor disclosed this on Thursday while receiving the Nigerian Army Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Makurdi.
In a statement released by the Government House Information Officer, Kehe Hon, Alia explained that the security landscape has changed significantly since his administration assumed office on May 29, 2023.
“Out of the 23 local government areas in Benue State, about 17 were under serious security threat when we came in.
Today, only three are experiencing minimal threats, and even in those areas, there is relative peace,” he said.
The governor commended the Nigerian Army and the Federal Government for supporting efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.
He added that closer collaboration between the military and the state government has been instrumental in improving safety in previously troubled communities.
Alia further urged residents to work with security agencies by sharing useful intelligence, stressing that citizens should see security personnel as partners committed to protecting lives and property.
