The vice president of US Kamala Harris on her visit to Ghana spoke with President Nana Akufo-Addo about human rights problems, including the Ghanaian Family Values Bill and the Promotion of Appropriate Human Sexual Rights Act, which is currently in Parliament.

Harris did not mention the measure specifically, but she underlined the significance of promoting freedom and equality for everyone, referring to it as a human rights problem.

In favor of waiting to see what parliament decides, President Akufo-Addo chose not to speak on what would happen to the bill if it were to pass.

President Akufo-Addo acknowledged that the bill has been introduced and is being studied by Parliament while also making it clear that there isn't any of such legislation in Ghana.

The President expressed confidence that the Parliament's consideration of the bill will take into account both concerns about human rights and the opinions of the Ghanaian people.

He emphasized that the bill has already undergone significant changes as a result of the Attorney General's participation and that it is a private member's bill rather than official government legislation.

In addition, President Akufo-Addo stated that should the parliament's decision on the bill conflict with the freedom and rights of LGBTQ+ people and activists, he will step in.

Many people have since the development voiced out their displeasure with the president of Ghana for not making his stance on the LGBTQ+ known to the public and 'beating around the bush'.
