VAR stopped Burnley vs Chelsea game after restart to avoid Tottenham vs Liverpool disaster

It has now emerged that the Video Assistant referee avoided another mistake in consecutive weeks after it stopped play after restart in the Burnley vs Chelsea game.

The application of the technology has come under fire in recent weeks after a communication breakdown saw a valid Luiz Diaz goal disallowed for offside in the controversial Tottenham vs Liverpool game on September 30.

The 'significant human error', as the referee's body put it, was noticed after play had already been restarted. Ordinarily, a decision cannot be changed once the referee has restarted the game.

However, the VAR in charge of Burnley's home game against Chelsea, Darren Bond, asked centre referee Stuart Attwell to halt play after the restart.

As ESPN reports, Raheem Sterling had put Chelsea 3-1 up, but there were a few concerns for a marginal offside. Attwell awarded the goal and restarted the game.

Bond, noticing that the game was going on, asked Attwell to stop play as the review was still ongoing. Luckily for VAR, Sterling was onside and thus, the original decision stood.

It would have been interesting to note how Attwell would have proceeded had VAR found the Chelsea forward in an offside position. A decision of disallowing the goal, seconds after allowing it and even restarting play would be the last thing PGMOL would have wanted seven days after the Liverpool farce.

Chelsea went on to record their second successive win in the Premier League, beating Vincent Kompany's side 4-1.
