'I won't apologise for 2010 handball incident' — Suarez tells Ghanaians ahead of crunch clash

Luiz Suarez has failed to accept the blame for Ghana's World Cup exit in 2010.

Ghana faced Uruguay in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa in what was a breath-taking encounter that still lingers in the minds of many Ghanaians 12 years on.

The Black Stars were an inch close to making history by being the first African country to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup but for Luiz Suarez's famous handball.

Ghana's legendary striker Gyan failed to convert the stoppage-time penalty kick as his strike tipped off the bar, breaking the hearts of Ghanaians.

The four-time African champions will have the chance to redeem themselves when they come up against the same opponent in their final group game at this year's FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of Ghana's clash on Friday, December 2, the former Barcelona and Liverpool striker insisted he will not apologise for the handball incident that led to Ghana's exit from tournament.

"I don’t need to apologize. I’d apologize if I injured a player but in this situation, I handled the ball, I took a red card, and the Ghana player missed the penalty."

"It’s not my fault. I didn’t miss the penalty. It’s not my responsibility," Luis Suarez added.

Ghana will lock horns with Uruguay at the Al Janoub Stadium at 4:00 pm on Friday.

The Black Stars will have to avoid a defeat to ensure they progress to the next phase of the competition.
