Celtic have been crowned the 2019/20 champions of the Scottish Premiership after the Scottish Professional Football League management ended the current season due to COVID-19.

The decision means the club has won the trophy for the ninth successive season having held a 13-point lead over Rangers with a handful of fixtures remaining.

The Hoops were 80 points ahead of second-placed the Gers who had 67 points after playing 30 and 29 matches respectively.

Celtic retained their trophy after the SPFL decided against a restart to the season on Monday during a board meeting.

Unfortunately, Hearts who were sitting at the rock bottom of the table are relegated to the Championship for the second time since 2014.

As with the Championship, League One and League Two, final season placings in the Premiership have been determined by points per game in league matches played to March 13 by each club.

The SPFL must now explain to UEFA why it has ended Premiership season early and who it nominates for 2020/21 Champions League/Europa League qualification.

European football's governing body asked Europe's top leagues to provide restart dates and format by May 25, with a "strong recommendation" for seasons to be completed even if required a change of format.
