Controversial UK-based Nigerian clergyman and SPAC Nation founder Pastor Tobi Adegboyega has addressed long-standing allegations labelling his ministry a cult.
According to him, the criticism is due to public confusion over the shared wealth and strong unity within his congregation.
Speaking on the recurring scrutiny surrounding his lifestyle and church operations, Adegboyega explained that people struggle to understand a model where young members enjoy the same level of prosperity as their leader.
"People will say we are a cult because we're so unified. If you see all my young men, they also drive like I drive. In church normally, the pastor will be rich, and many people there will be poor," he said.
He noted that while conventional churches often feature a wealthy pastor alongside impoverished congregants, his ministry ensures that the young men under his mentorship drive the same high-end cars he drives.
The cleric added that he no longer harbours resentment toward critics, stating that he has forgiven those who mischaracterise the church out of confusion and remains grateful even for the backlash.
"But they've never seen that kind. Sometimes I forgive those who call us a cult and all that because they are confused. So I don't get angry anymore. I'm grateful for the haters because they don't have. What can you do?" he said.
“H@ters call my church a cult because they’ve never seen a pastor successful and his members successful too. What they’re used to is one rich pastor and a whole lot of poor members” — Pastor Tobi Adegboyega pic.twitter.com/XeMLmdWYem
