Nollywood actress Jemima Osunde has drawn widespread praise online after refusing to yield to a one-way driver accompanied by a police officer near the Oriental Hotel on the Lekki–Victoria Island expressway in Lagos.
In a video she shared via her social media handles, Osunde narrated how she was headed towards Victoria Island when a vehicle headed in the opposite direction moved into her lane in an attempt to bypass traffic by driving against oncoming vehicles in her lane.
The actress blocked the offender and held her position until officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority arrived to intervene.
"This person is in my lane with a police officer in his car and is expecting me to leave my lane. You are passing one way. You left your own side of the road because of traffic, and you have a policeman in your car, but expect me to leave my lane.
"I blocked him, and I said I'm not moving. And now LASTMA has come. Hopefully they arrest him because this is part of the problem in this country," she shared.
Osunde condemned the driver's arrogance and highlighted how everyday indiscipline contributes to broader societal problems. She noted that unless the offender was an ambulance or a fire truck responding to an emergency, having a police officer in the vehicle was no excuse to break traffic laws and congest the roads further.
"It's easy to say Nigeria is bad; Nigeria is this. We are contributing to it. Unless you're in an ambulance or a fire truck on emergency service. I will not leave my lane for you when you are passing one way; I won't do it. I don't care if you have police in your car," she said.
She emphasized that standing her ground was necessary to prevent the driver from repeating the violation; her action has sparked praise from social media users and further discussions on social media regarding accountability and road discipline in Nigerian cities.
