Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has raised alarm over what he calls a dangerous trend in the Nigerian film industry, especially on YouTube.
In a video shared on Instagram, the legendary actor expressed that casting is now based on popularity and looks rather than acting talent.
The legendary actor announced he will focus on working with fresh and lesser-known talents through his YouTube platform, Kanayo O. Kanayo TV.
“Movie making is not about having a fine face, it’s about being a good actor, a good performer. So, with or without a fine face, that’s what I’ve decided to do. If you don’t like it, well, that’s quite unfortunate.”
Kanayo criticised the growing monopoly of “YouTube faces” who dominate roles, making it hard for new talents to break in.
He stressed that his interest is in ability, not hype: “Don’t call me because I’m a selling face; call me because I can deliver.”
Encouraging aspiring actors, he added, “If you’re a new face, come, let’s create magic.”
