Award-winning Nigerian music star Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, has shed light on the struggles of maintaining humility while navigating fame and public expectations in the music industry.
In a recent video circulating online, the former YBNL signee reflected on how public perception often determines how artistes are treated in the industry.
According to him, humility does not always command respect and can sometimes work against an artiste in an environment that prioritises glamour and image over sincerity.
“As an artiste, if you’re humble, they take you for granted. But if you have ego, they feel like you’re not accessible, then they like you more,” Asake explained. “People would rather see what you’re doing than you showing them. They don’t really appreciate it. Do what you need to do and just go.”
He noted that fans are often more attracted to a sense of mystery than openness or relatability.
For this reason, he believes artistes should focus less on seeking constant approval and more on letting their work speak for itself.
Some commentators argue that Wizkid has set a good precedent while urging colleague, Davido, to do the same.

@StatsByGreyson___"This logic isn't just applicable as a music artiste, but as a person. Relate with people and give them boundaries. When it's business it's business. When it's fun it's fun. No go hug person when you suppose give handshake."
@Igbeauxx___"I keep saying this, humility is a trap. As you go, your ego and pride should grow with you else people will take you for granted. Humility is a trap by people just to maintain access to you when they shouldn’t. Don’t fall for it."
@oduvlaru___"That’s the paradox of fame and human nature. Many people confuse humility with weakness, so they overlook it. But when an artist sets boundaries or carries confidence, it’s seen as exclusivity, and people are drawn to what feels rare.
The key is balance: stay grounded, but never let humility make people strip you of respect. True humility isn’t about being stepped on; it’s about knowing your worth and not needing to shout it."
