Social media influencer shot dead during livestream

A Mexican comedy influencer was shot dead on Tuesday while livestreaming on TikTok. César Gastélum was killed outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacán, Mexico.

He was filming with two friends when two men rode up on a motorcycle. One of them opened fire at close range and shot Gastélum before speeding off.

Police initially mistook him for a delivery rider. He and his friends were wearing bright yellow jackets and carrying delivery bags at the time. His true identity was confirmed shortly after.

No one has been arrested yet. Investigators say they are studying bullet casings found at the scene and checking CCTV footage for clues.

So far, police have not said why Gastélum was targeted. It is also not clear if he had received any threats before the shooting.

His killing adds to a growing list of social media personalities murdered in Mexico. Beauty influencer Valeria Márquez, 23, was shot dead while livestreaming from a salon in Zapopan in May 2025.

Another content creator, Leobardo "El Gordo Peruci" Aispuro, was killed in Culiacán back in December 2024.

The string of killings has raised fresh concerns about the safety of online influencers in Mexico.
