'I wanted a balance' - VeryDarkMan reveals why he wanted Davido to win the Grammy

Nigerian social media commentator Vincent Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has shared his reaction to South African singer Tyla’s victory in the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammy Awards, where she beat several top Nigerian acts.

Tyla clinched the award on Sunday night with her song "Push 2 Start", securing her second win in the category after claiming the inaugural prize in 2024 with "Water."

Shortly after the announcement, VeryDarkMan took to social media to express his views, releasing a video in which he questioned the outcome of the category.

While acknowledging the quality of the nominated Nigerian entries, the outspoken influencer admitted he had hoped "Davido" would emerge victorious, arguing that it would have brought a sense of “balance” among Nigeria’s leading Afrobeats stars.

“Tyla again? Anyways, shoutout to Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra starr and Wizkid. You guys put in the efforts.

“However, I will be very honest, I really wanted Davido to win so as to create balance. I like the cruise between the fans of the Afrobeats Big 3 on social media," he said.

He went on to commend Nigerian nominees **Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Wizkid** for their efforts, noting that all the songs submitted from Nigeria were strong contenders.

“The entries from Nigeria were very good songs but it is what it is,” he added.

Despite his reservations, VDM concluded that the outcome was beyond debate, adding, “The Nigerian entries were very good songs, but it is what it is.”
