Facts about Patience Ozokwor, why she stayed single after husband's death

Patience Ozokwor popularly known as Mama G is one of Nollywood's seasoned actors who has been in the industry for over two decades and has established a reputation for herself with her versatility and role interpretations.

She doubles as a fashion designer, gospel singer and a woman of God.

Patience Ozokwor has contributed immensely to the Nollywood industry and has received various recognitions.

With the actress' contribution, MyNigeria reveals some fascinating details about her and some significant life decisions she had to make.

1. Age and early life:

Patience Ozokwor was born on September 14, 1958 in Amaobo, Ngwo in Udi Local Government Area in Enugu State.

She grew up in Enugu State in the south Eastern part of the country where she completed her primary school education and obtained her First School Leaving Certificate.

She also attended Abimbola Gibson Memorial High School in Lagos State in the south western part of Nigeria.

2. Marriage life:

The veteran actress married at a very young age - 19-years-old when she obtained her West African Senior School Certificate. She had three biological children with her husband and five adopted children who also bares her late husband's name.

Her husband died in 2000 and as someone who married at an early age and would have loved to enjoy it to the fullest, she decided to stay a widow following her husband's demise as it was a huge sacrifice she had to make for her children.

According to the veteran actress she wanted to remarry but her children pleaded with her not to because they had already grown and they promised to be her husband and take care of her.

3. Movie career:

Patience Ozokwor started acting right from her secondary school days when she played the role of Hamlet in Shakespeare’s classic drama.

In 1995, Patience Ozokwor joined the Nigerian movie industry (Nollywood) and rose to fame after starring in the movie “Living in Bondage”, a movie that brought Nollywood to limelight.

She is currently regarded as one of the pioneers of the Nollywood industry and contributed immensely to the growth of Nollywood in Nigeria and globally.

4. Training College and broadcasting:

After her early marriage she furthered her education at the Women’s Training College in Lagos and obtained a National Certificate of Education (NCE) in teaching.

After her graduation from the Women’s Training College, Patience Ozokwor went on to become a professional teacher in a reputable secondary school and taught for four solid years before quitting the job.

Patience Ozokwor left her teaching job and moved on to radio broadcasting, where she worked as a radio presenter and newscaster.

She worked at the station until it was closed down. She went on to another broadcasting facility where she began to do radio drama.

She later decided to open a training school to help young female school dropouts start a business of their choice. She taught the girls how to make hair and skin care.

The project was sponsored by the Enugu state government. Due to her humanitarian services she was politically appointed as the assistant to the wife of the Mayor of her local government in Enugu State, Nigeria.

5. Awards:

She has acted in more than 350 Nollywood movies. Some of the movies she has acted include Living in Bondage, My Sweet Mother, Aguba, Witches, Atinga, The Coven, Idemili, The Calabash, Old School and many more.

In 2005, Mama G won the Best Supporting Actress of the Year Award at the 10th Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Patience Ozokwor haS resigned from acting and movie production and is currently an evangelist ministering the gospel of God. According to her, an angel came to her in her dream and told her that God said she should stop her acting career and serve him.
