Disturbing footage has surfaced showing beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina and her family being physically assaulted and harassed by aggressive protesters as they exited a court proceeding in South Africa over her right to remain in the country.
In the viral video, Adetshina and her family are seen leaving the court premises while an angry crowd hoots, jeers, and hurls insults at them. As the family attempted to make their way to safety, several protesters ran up from behind and physically hit them, forcing them to run for their lives to reach a waiting vehicle.
The incident marks a dramatic and dangerous escalation in the ongoing legal battle surrounding her residency and citizenship status.
Adetshina’s ordeal began during her run as a contestant in the Miss South Africa pageant, where her participation sparked intense public debate and online xenophobic backlash due to her Nigerian and Mozambican heritage.
Although born in South Africa, her eligibility was publicly questioned, prompting an investigation by South Africa's Department of Home Affairs into her mother’s citizenship records.
To safeguard her family and personal safety, she withdrew from Miss South Africa, accepted an invitation to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria—which she won—and went on to finish as the first runner-up at the global Miss Universe pageant.
Despite her success on the international stage, legal pressures and deportation threats from South African authorities have continued over her status and right to remain in the country.
Adetshina recently spoke out on the situation, maintaining that she has been unfairly targeted and made an example of, while urging that "xenophobia and misinformation" should not outweigh the rule of law.
