Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed the downside of intense fan culture, admitting that toxic behavior from his dedicated fanbase, known as 30BG (30 Billion Gang), directly derailed a major international music video project with rap legend Nicki Minaj.
Speaking during a recent appearance on a UK-based podcast, the "Unavailable" singer detailed how digital harassment by his supporters destroyed plans for "Holy Ground," their hit collaboration featured on his 2020 album 'A Better Time'.
According to Davido, the trouble began ahead of the album’s release when overzealous fans flooded the direct messages of international superstars Nicki Minaj and Lil Baby, "dragging" and attacking them online.
He stated that due to that incident, when his '5ive' album was about to be released, he had to call someone within his fanbase to deter them from going after people he had collaborated with.
"I can't call all of my fans, but there is someone in 30BG I can call to calm them down.
"When my album was dropping, I had to call the person because the last time, they went to Nicki Minaj and Lil Baby's DMs and started dragging them. Nicki called me about it, and that was why we couldn’t shoot the music video for 'Holy Ground,'" he revealed.
The Nigerian hitmaker emphasized that while fan passion is common in the music industry, unbridled hostility can backfire and harm an artiste's professional relationships and business opportunities.
Davido recalled having to step in directly with key leaders of his fanbase to prevent clashes, particularly when maintaining positive relationships with fellow industry heavyweights like Wizkid.
"I had to call the person to tell them to chill out," Davido added. "I was with Wizkid earlier in the week, so they shouldn't go attacking people. Because these things affect things sometimes."
“I called someone in 30BG to tell others to calm down and not banter anyone when my album was dropping because the last time they went to Nicki Minaj & Lil Baby’s DMs & started dragging them. Nicki called me, and that was why we couldn’t shoot the music video for Holy Ground." -… pic.twitter.com/AOgWshWjiT
