MTN allegedly accused of funding Taliban, al-Qaeda groups

MTN MTN

Telecommunications giant, MTN is going through troubled times after an allegation has surfaced that it paid bribes to militant Islamist groups in Afghanistan.

According to the BBC, MTN helped finance a Taliban-led insurgency that led to the attacks in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2017.

This was revealed in a formal complaint lodged on behalf of families of US citizens killed in attacks in Afghanistan. The complaints were filed in a US federal court last week.

MTN was not the only firm embroiled in the allegations. Five more companies were also complicit in the crime.

While the telco giant believes it conducted its business appropriately, the allegations say otherwise, linking the firm to Taliban and al-Qaeda while stating that the firm violated US laws on anti-terrorism.
