Super Eagles striker, Tolu Arokodare, came off the bench to score a 64th-minute equaliser as Ajax were held to a 2-2 draw by Excelsior at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Arokodare was introduced in the 62nd minute and needed just two minutes to make his mark, sweeping in Oscar Gloukh’s pass from inside the six-yard area.

Julian Brandt had given Ajax the lead in the 32nd minute, but Lennard Hartjes levelled in first-half stoppage time.

Aymen Sliti then put the visitors ahead in the 62nd minute before Arokodare rescued a point.

The Nigerian finished with nine attempts, 12 touches in the box and five aerial duels won, and he glanced a corner against the left post in the 87th minute.

Ajax had 33 shots to Excelsior’s four and enjoyed 80.8 per cent possession, yet could not find a winner. They remain fourth, while Excelsior climbed from seventh to sixth. Ajax host NEC Nijmegen next, while Excelsior welcome Groningen.

Arokodare has now scored five goals in eight appearances since joining Ajax on loan from Wolves, a deal that runs until the summer of 2027 and includes an option to make the move permanent.

He had battled a fever earlier in the week and was an unused substitute in the 5-1 win over Willem II.

His teammate, Kasper Dolberg, has said he wants to learn from him.

“He is a specialist in choosing his position and is a monster in front of goal. I talk to him a lot about that. I need to start scoring more,” Dolberg told De Telegraaf.

Former Ajax midfielder, Marciano Vink, has tipped Arokodare to score 25 goals in the Eredivisie this season.

Nigeria begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo on September 25.
