FLASHBACK: My mother never wanted me to play football- Rashidi Yekini

Legendary Nigerian Footballer, Rashidi Yekini has made a huge revelation.

In a throwback interview, the striker revealed his mother's fear for the game and how she never supported his football career initially.

This was mostly due to injuries several footballers were likely to have.

"I started my football career in Kaduna but my mother never wanted me to play football because they say people used to break leg there. My dad was never afraid, he gave me his full support," the Nigerian International said.

Yekini went on to talk about his illustrious career and how he joined UNTL Kaduna where he was based.

He spoke about how Segun Odegbami inspired his career, noting that his passion for football was beyond just money.

Yekini scored 37 goals as a Nigerian international, and represented the nation in five major tournaments, including two World Cups where he scored the country's first-ever goal in the competition. He was also named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993.

He died in Ibadan on 4 May 2012 at the age of 48, the news being confirmed by former national teammates Mutiu Adepoju and Ike Shorunmu. The striker was buried at his residence in Ira, Kwara State.
