German giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have entered the race to sign highly rated Nigeria-eligible teenage defender Honest Ahanor, as interest intensifies around the €60m-rated prospect ahead of the summer transfer window, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 18-year-old, who currently plays for Atalanta, has emerged as one of the most sought-after young defenders in European football, with his rapid development drawing attention from clubs across the continent.
Ahanor’s blend of tactical discipline and athleticism has seen him rise quickly through the ranks, with the versatile defender capable of operating as a left-back, wing-back or left-sided centre-back.
His performances in Serie A have significantly boosted his market value, with reports suggesting he could command a fee in the region of €50m to €60m.
According to FussballDaten, Borussia Dortmund are understood to view the teenager as a long-term project, consistent with their strategy of nurturing elite young talent.
The Bundesliga side are prepared to offer him a pathway into the first team, alongside a structured transfer package that includes performance-related bonuses.
“Borussia Dortmund see Ahanor as their next major project,” FussballDaten stated.
“The German side are prepared to offer him a place in the starting line-up, alongside a transfer package worth around €25m plus performance-related bonuses.”
FussballDaten added that Bayern Munich are also firmly in the race as they look to address depth concerns in defence.
The Bavarian club are believed to regard Ahanor as a long-term solution, particularly given his tactical flexibility and composure at a young age.
“Defensive rotation issues have prompted Bayern Munich to enter the race for the teenager,” FussballDaten added.
“Internally, he is viewed as a ‘defender of the future’, particularly due to his tactical versatility. Bayern are ready to use their financial strength to outbid Dortmund and secure his signature.”
Atalanta are understood to be reluctant to part with the defender, viewing him as a key component of their future plans. However, the club’s established model of developing and selling talent could come into play if a substantial offer is made.
Born in Aversa to Nigerian parents, Ahanor has recently pledged his international future to Italy despite being eligible to represent Nigeria.
The defender, a product of the Genoa academy, has already begun his international journey with Italy’s U-21 side after receiving a call-up during the March international window from coach Silvio Baldini.
His decision to represent Italy over the Super Eagles has added another layer of intrigue to his rising profile, as Nigeria miss out on one of Europe’s most promising defensive talents.
