Tijani Babangida in his hay days was one of the most feared attacking players in the Super Eagles set-up. He was important to the team because his style of play offered the opportunity to switch strategy and tactics when it became needed.

He was also a terror to defenders with his width and lateral movement. Known by the nickname TJ, he was diminutive, fast and clever at the same time.

These qualities literally bought him the number 13 jersey. To date, no number 13 has had the sort of impact Babangida had in his time.

Born on this day in 1973 to a fairly large family in Kaduna State, Babangida had always set his sight on football.

After successfully breaking through the ranks at local club, Niger Tornadoes, he made his way to Europe where he signed for Dutch giants, Ajax. Despite short spells at Barcelona, Vitesse, Al-Ittihad, and Roda JC; he spent majority of his career in Holland.

While he achieved a significant amount of success at the club level, Babangida’s game improved and he became instrumental to the Super Eagles.

He journey with the national team began in 1991 after a stellar performance in the All African Games. Subsequently, he played over 30 games for the Super Eagles, including four at the 1998 World Cup in France.

He participated in two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and won the 1996 Olympics with the Dream Team.

Babangida scored some very important goals for the national team. The most memorable was his double that sent the Super Eagles to the finals of AFCON 2000 at the expense of the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

He was married to Rabah, the sister of Daniel Amokachi's wife.

To commemorate his birth, we present a compilation of some of his important goals.
