The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has issued an apology to Nigerians following widespread electricity disruptions across major commercial hubs, assuring the public that government agencies are working to restore normal supply quickly.
The assurance comes amid heavy drop-offs in power availability across Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara, and Oyo States—regions that had recently experienced relative stability in grid delivery.
In an official statement issued by Adeola Adelabu, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister, the ministry acknowledged the disruption caused to households and economic activities across the affected states.
"The Ministry acknowledges the inconvenience this has caused households, businesses and public institutions, and understands the frustration of Nigerians who had begun to see the benefits of steadier supply. We recognise what every hour without power means for individuals, families and businesses, and we do not take it lightly," the statement read.
Gas and Water Constraints Behind Disruption Addressing the cause of the blackouts, the ministry clarified that the ongoing power drop is not due to a collapse or systemic failure of the national grid.
Instead, the disruptions stem from routine maintenance work combined with a decline in power generation, caused by severe gas supply constraints to thermal power stations and reduced water inflows into key hydroelectric reservoirs.
Tegbe confirmed that he is coordinating directly with key power sector stakeholders, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), and regional Distribution Companies (DisCos), to resolve the generation and distribution bottlenecks.
"The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to the progress already recorded and to improving the reliability and quality of electricity supply nationwide. Nigerians deserve better power, and this administration is working to deliver it," the statement concluded, appealing for public patience as restoration work progresses.
