Lagos govt demolishes illegal structures at Trade Fair Complex

Scene of the incident Scene of the incident

The Lagos State Government has begun the demolition of illegal structures without statutory approvals in the Trade Fair Complex, Ojo Local Government Area.

The government also demolished defective structures and those built on road setbacks and drainage areas.

Present during the exercise included members of the Lagos State Urban Development, Ministry of Physical Planning, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), Office of Infrastructure, including the Honourable Members of the Lagos House of Assembly and security agencies.

Reacting, an X user, @handsumeze, said, "There's flood all over Lagos Island, Lekki, Ikoyi, the government is not active to clear drainage and take down, but it's Ojo that I didn't see one video of flooding; that's where the activity is strong to clear and take down, okay ooo."

@mainolufemi said, "What were these agencies doing while the structures were being built to this level? They should also be penalised, not just the developers!"

@zegene_HO said, "But is there no other better way of taking care of the situation than demolishing it ... It is a business building, can't it be redesigned with the drainage considered... This is too much to be a waste."

@yemiyyz said, "I think @jidesanwoolu needs to urgently restructure the Ministry of Physical/Urban Planning. They seem overwhelmed and lack capacity. How do whole estates and markets get fully built before anyone realizes they’re illegal? That’s a system failure."

@amosegun said, " NO to this approach. This is hard-earned money going down the drain. It is not possible to erect such an edifice without some govt official (rtd or active) backing. Until such officials are brought to book, we keep having this springing up."

@Blessedo_101 said, "The funny thing is some people will think the buildings only belong to Ibo people and that's a very lazy and foolish way to think."
