National Assembly paralyzed as Labour shuts down access to water and electricity

National Assembly National Assembly

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), in solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has effectively paralyzed operations at the National Assembly.

The move comes as part of a nationwide indefinite strike that commenced on June 3, 2024, following the government's refusal to raise the minimum wage above N60,000.

Daily Trust reports that the National Assembly's entrance and exit points were obstructed by two coastal buses, a strategic move by PASAN to enforce the strike.

The deadlock in wage negotiations reached a critical point during a three-hour meeting in Abuja, where Labour Union representatives stood firm on their demand for a N494,000 minimum wage.

The strike, triggered by the tripartite committee's inability to agree on a new wage structure, has led to drastic measures, including the suspension of electricity and water services to the Senate and House of Representatives buildings, among other facilities within the National Assembly complex.
