In the wake of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) commencing a strike, there have been widespread reports of union members dispersing staff at the Lagos office of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
The strike, declared on May 31, 2024, is a direct response to the government's stance on the proposed new minimum wage.
Organised Labour has taken this drastic step following the Federal Government's refusal to raise its minimum wage offer beyond N60,000.
NLC President Joe Ajaero has stated that the strike ensued after unsuccessful negotiations with the federal government, which also stood firm on its decision to remove the power sector subsidy and to hike electricity tariffs.
A deadline of May 31, 2024, had been set by the unions for finalizing the minimum wage talks.
Initially, the government's offer was increased from N57,000 to N60,000, while the unions lowered their demand from N497,000 to N494,000, a significant drop from their original figure of N615,000.
However, the deadlock persisted as the government's offer remained at N60,000, prompting the unions to initiate an indefinite nationwide strike.
