A section of social media users has criticized political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, for making offensive remarks about former Minister Oby Ezekwesili.
Omokri, in a post on his Facebook page, commented on Ezekwesili’s conduct during a recent hearing by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.
The hearing was convened to address a petition submitted by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Referring to Ezekwesili’s demeanor at the session, Omokri wrote: "Oby Ezekwesili's manners are in equal proportion to her beauty!"
His comment has sparked backlash, with many condemning it as inappropriate and misogynistic.
The controversy stems from a heated exchange between Ezekwesili and Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, the senator representing Ebonyi North.
Ezekwesili had attended the hearing alongside Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, counsel to Akpoti-Uduaghan, and the chief petitioner from Kogi Central, Zubairu Yakubu. While asserting her right to be heard, she requested to be placed under oath as a witness, stating, “I asked to be put on oath as a witness. I am a citizen of Nigeria.”
Her insistence led to a verbal altercation with Nwaebonyi, who lashed out at her, saying, “You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here.”
Ezekwesili, in response, called him a “hooligan,” further escalating the argument, which momentarily disrupted the proceedings before order was restored.
A video of the incident has since gone viral, generating widespread discussion. However, Omokri’s comments on the matter have been widely condemned, with many calling them unnecessary and offensive.
