Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has revealed why he doesn't wear Ankara fabric but prefers to wear Aso Oke.
According to him, Ankara has nothing to do with Nigeria or Africa, despite the fabric's popularity on the continent.
He stated that he prefers to wear Aso Oke because it was invented in Nigeria, adding that he also wears textiles from Kaduna.
Omokri said this in response to a Facebook user who advised him also to wear Ankara as much as he does Aso Oke..
He responded, "Dear Tunji, Thank you for your feedback. The fabric now known as Ankara has nothing to do with Nigeria or Africa. It originates from Indonesia. Indonesia was colonised by the Dutch, who saw an opportunity and began mass producing a version of the Indonesian material known as Batik.
"However, the Indonesians are not as culturally fickle as many sub-Saharan Black Africans. So they rejected the cultural appropriation of their Batik, and it did not sell in Indonesia.
"Not wanting to make a loss, the Dutch brought their fake Batik to sub-Saharan Black Africa, and some of our people eagerly bought them and incorporated them as their 'cultural' clothes till today.
"Every time you wear Ankara, you are advertising your inferiority complex and the low state of your culture.
"I wear Aso Oke because it was invented in Nigeria, which has been made by hand using local technology for over eight hundred years. I also wear Kaduna textiles because they originate in Nigeria.
"Even my corpse will not wear Ankara.
'Thanks again, and may God bless you."
