In the year 2025, a new chapter unfolded in the history of Ibadanland as Oba Rashidi Ladoja was solemnly installed as the 44th Olubadan, marking a momentous occasion that resonated deeply within Nigeria’s largest indigenous city—a blend of tradition and contemporary politics.
MyNigeria highlights some essential facts about this distinguished leader and traditional monarch.
Rashidi Ladoja's political journey began with his tenure as the governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007, representing the Peoples Democratic Party. His time in office was characterized by notable achievements, yet not without controversy, including an impeachment that was later nullified by the courts.
Born on September 25, 1944, Ladoja’s ascent to the throne came at the age of 81, an age that reflects his lifelong dedication to public service, business, and leadership within the traditional system.
Educated in Belgium at the prestigious University of Liège, where he studied Chemical Engineering, Ladoja is multilingual, fluent in French and other languages, and has built a successful career spanning diverse professional fields.
Prior to his ascension, he made a name for himself in the business world, working with international firms like Total Nigeria and establishing himself in oil, gas, and shipping industries.
His journey through the ancient Ibadan chieftaincy system spans over three decades. Starting with various traditional titles such as Jagun Olubadan, Osi Olubadan, and Otun Olubadan, he steadily advanced within the rotational and seniority-based succession line.
Ladoja’s commitment to preserving Ibadan’s traditional heritage was evident in his vigorous opposition to the 2017 chieftaincy review spearheaded by then-Governor Abiola Ajimobi, a move he challenged in court to uphold the integrity of the indigenous institution.
Known for his composed and diplomatic demeanor, Ladoja has earned respect for his role as a mediator and stabilizer in both political and social spheres. As Olubadan, expectations are high that he will foster unity and guide Ibadanland through its complexities.
He succeeded Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, who reigned until his passing on July 7, 2025, after a distinguished reign from 2024.
Oba Rashidi Ladoja’s story is one of resilience, tradition, and leadership—an inspiring journey that continues to shape the destiny of Ibadanland.
