Spanish second-division club CD Tenerife has confirmed that striker Jesús de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after colliding with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a league match.

De Miguel died on Tuesday, November 3, a day after the incident at Tenerife’s Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.

The collision occurred late in the match. De Miguel went for a loose ball as Owono left his goal to clear it. The goalkeeper, outside his penalty area, collided with the striker, who was left unconscious on the pitch.

Medical staff treated De Miguel on the field for several minutes before taking him by stretcher to the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.

The match was level at 2-2 and was abandoned in the 108th minute so medical staff could attend to De Miguel. Owono was sent off following the collision.

Spanish media reported that De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest after the incident and was resuscitated in the ambulance. His condition initially appeared stable but worsened in the early hours of Tuesday.

CD Tenerife announced that De Miguel died at 8am on Tuesday.

In a statement, the club said: “Broken with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.”

The club added: “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this feeling of overwhelming sadness. We stand with his devastated family, his loved ones and the entire Tenerife family, who mourn this cruel outcome.”

The club also offered its condolences to De Miguel’s family, friends, teammates and supporters.

His family thanked those who had sent messages of support and asked for privacy during this difficult time.
