Former Super Eagles midfielder John Mikel Obi has weighed in on the recent on-field clash between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
The Galatasaray striker and the Atalanta star clashed during the Super Eagles' 4-0 thumping of Mozambique in the round of 16 of the ongoing AFCON.
Despite the Super Eagles’ remarkable performance against the Mambas, Osimhen's clash with Lookman became the major talking point after the game.
Sharing his thoughts on the incident, Mikel Obi recalled his own clash with former Super Eagles teammate Victor Moses during the 2013 AFCON.
“When we won the AFCON in 2013, Victor Moses was my roommate. Now, we know Victor — when he gets the ball, he likes to go and dribble and create a chance, which was absolutely fantastic for Victor,” Mikel Obi said.
“A couple of times, he did it and squared the ball, but he wanted to shoot. Then I went to him and said, ‘you have to fucking pass the ball.’ He said no, and I said, ‘you have to fucking pass the ball if somebody is pretty open, because we have to win here, Victor.’
“It’s not about you, and we had an argument on the pitch. After the game, he was still angry about what happened. We went into the room and slept for hours. We didn’t speak to each other; we were walking past each other in the room.
“We didn’t say anything to each other, and when we woke up the next morning, we still didn’t say anything to each other. Then, after we thought about it, there were much bigger things at stake. We spoke to each other, and we won. So, these things happen, but we had to deal with it.”
