The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, wept at the burial of a party supporter in Enugu State.
The deceased, identified as Nworie Christopher, was reportedly shot during an attack on NDC supporters at the party’s governorship campaign flag-off in Enugu.
According to reports, Nworie died from gunshot wounds sustained during an attack on the party’s campaign office on October 10.
In a video that has surfaced on social media, the former Anambra State governor broke down in tears while speaking at the late supporter’s burial.
Obi described the death as avoidable, adding that no one should lose their life because of an election.
“One day, we will all end up six feet underground. His death is painful. I was supposed to return tomorrow, but because of this burial, I immediately changed my ticket and returned to Nigeria from the UK last night.
“We cannot continue like this. Someone died because of an election. Why not campaign based on issues? You cannot see me campaigning by insulting another party. I campaign based on issues that concern the people,” Obi said.
