Leicester eye Okonkwo

Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has emerged as a transfer target for Leicester City after contract talks with Wrexham stalled, with the 24-year-old now expected to leave the club when his deal expires at the end of next season.

According to AllAboutLeagueOne, Leicester have identified Okonkwo as a potential signing as the Foxes prepare for life in League One following their unexpected relegation from the Championship last season — a dramatic fall from grace for a club that won the Premier League a decade ago in one of sport’s greatest upsets.

Okonkwo arrived at Wrexham as a free agent three years ago after leaving Arsenal and has since developed into one of the more dependable goalkeepers outside the top two divisions.

He was instrumental in the club’s promotion campaign to the Championship and remained a regular starter last season before manager Phil Parkinson opted to rotate in Danny Ward in the closing stages of the campaign. That decision, combined with the breakdown in contract extension talks, has left the Nigerian’s future at the club in serious doubt with only a year remaining on his current deal.

His stock has also been raised by his recent senior debut for the Super Eagles, a breakthrough that brought him to the attention of clubs who may not have been monitoring him as closely before his international recognition.

Okonkwo is valued at €5m by Transfermarkt, a figure that may present a challenge for Leicester given the financial constraints that come with operating in the third tier of English football.

The Foxes’ relegation to League One has significantly reduced their income streams, and acquiring a goalkeeper of Okonkwo’s calibre at his likely asking price would require careful financial planning.

For Okonkwo, the prospect of joining Leicester — even in League One — carries its own appeal. The club retain considerable infrastructure, a sizeable fanbase and resources that most third-tier sides cannot match, and the expectation of an immediate promotion challenge would give the goalkeeper a realistic pathway back to the Championship and potentially the Premier League within two seasons.
