Lagos govt raids streets beggars in statewide clampdown

In continuation of a statewide enforcement exercise aimed at ridding the state of beggars, miscreants, and other social nuisances, the Lagos State Government on Thursday apprehended 19 individuals, comprising 11 adults and eight children, at various locations on Lagos Island.

Additionally, 21 beggars were apprehended during separate operations carried out at Ikorodu Garage and along the Ikeja axis.

The exercise forms part of the state government’s ongoing commitment to maintaining public order, ensuring environmental sanity, and safeguarding residents across the state.

Profiling and necessary procedures are currently being carried out, while the underage children will be handed over to the appropriate social welfare authorities for proper care and rehabilitation.

Giving an update, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said, "The underage children picked up statewide for begging on our roads have been properly profiled and handed over to the Ministry of Youth and Social Development for onward placement in the homes and shelters provided by the State Government, where they will receive the necessary care, protection, and support.

"The adult beggars are also being handed over to the appropriate authorities for further necessary action in line with existing laws and government policies.
