June 12: Demonstrations for Democracy Day have erupted across Nigeria

Ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, some youths in Benin, Friday evening took to the streets to protest against alleged poor security situation in the country.

The angry youths blocked the ever busy First East Circular Road, by Akpakpava Junction, with used tyres, thereby slowing down vehicular traffic.
One of the protesters was heard saying that the road blockade is just the prelude to Saturday’s mass protest.

He warned that no police or security organization would be able to stop them from walking round the city, adding that it is their fundamental human right.

Students, youths and secession agitators had vowed to stage mass protests across the country, on June 12, to express their displeasure over government’s way of handling things.

On Saturday, a massive crowd have come out in Abuja to protest against President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

In a video shared, the protesters were heard chanting ‘Buhari Must Go’ with placards showing their displeasure in the President’s actions.

Men of the Nigeria Police Force on Saturday morning disrupted a protest in the Gudu area of Abuja when they stormed the area and started firing teargas canisters.

The protest began around 08:30 am and was going on smoothly with the protesters, mostly youths, expressing their dissatisfaction with the state of the nation.

The protesters, who chanted “Buhari must go”, “Say no to injustice”, amongst other solidarity phrases, took to their heels and scampered for safety when the security operatives started shooting.

The protest is aimed at speaking against some of the unpleasant things happening in this government that includes nepotism, banditry, killings, increase in price of goods, to mention a few.

In Lagos, protesters trooped out despite heavy police presence at the Gani Fawehinmi Park at Ojora. Some of the protesters were later arrested by the police at the ongoing June 12 protest in Ojota area of Lagos state.

Both in Lagos and Abuja, the protest was peaceful until security officers started picking the protesters up.

Protesters also came out in large numbers in locations in Akure, Osogbo, Ibadan, among others, holding placards demanding for better governance in Nigeria, equity, fairness and provision of basic amenities as well as an end to insecurity which has claimed many lives.
