The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Dr Nasiru Idris, has been declared the winner of the Kebbi State Governorship Election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The returning officer for the governorship election, Professor Sa’idu Yusuf, announced that Dr Idris won the election with a total of 409,225 votes, defeating his rival, Aminu Bande of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 360,940 votes, Daily Trust reported.

INEC on Sunday, April 16, declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Dr Nasiru Idris, winner of the Kebbi State election.

“I, Sa’idu Yusuf, returning officer of Kebbi State Governorship Election hereby declared Nasiru Idris of the APC winner of the governorship election having polled a total of 409,225 and having satisfying the requirements of the law," the returning officer said.

Why Kebbi governorship election was previously declared inconclusive

It is worth noting that the governorship election initially took place on March 18 but was declared inconclusive by INEC due to cases of violence and over-voting.

The supplementary election was subsequently held, with a total of 95,897 registered voters and 40,186 accredited voters. The APC received 20,967 votes, while the PDP received 17,960 votes in the supplementary election.

The total valid votes recorded in the election were 781,478, with 19,082 votes rejected as invalid. The total votes cast were 800,560, with Dr Idris of the APC garnering a total of 409,225 votes, and Aminu Bande of the PDP polling 360,940 votes.

Speaking to journalists, Festus Okoye, the INEC National Publicity and Voter Education Commissioner, stated that the outcome of the supplementary election in Kebbi State demonstrates INEC's commitment to doing what is right.

“We hope to build on this and as well improve on the feat recorded in kebbi State. We are sure the people of kebbi State would be happy with the process that produced their governor elect," Okoye said.
