Gani Adams urges reversal of mother tongue removal from Nigerian curriculum

The leader of the Oodua Progressive Union Worldwide and the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has urged the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, to reconsider the decision to eliminate the use of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction in Nigeria's educational curriculum.

During the 12th Oodua Progressive Union global congress held in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, titled "Empowering the Yoruba Homeland and Diaspora: Strategies for Growth and Development," Iba Gani Adams emphasized that no prominent race in the world neglects its language. He pointed out that education's core purpose is to deepen understanding of one’s culture and language.

He highlighted the numerous educational, cultural, and social advantages of mother tongue instruction in Nigeria, warning that its removal could hinder students’ comprehension and academic success, particularly in early childhood education.

He said, "Research consistently shows that children learn best in their mother tongue during the foundational years of education. Mother tongue instruction enhances comprehension, critical thinking, and cognitive development, providing a strong foundation for acquiring additional languages and complex subjects."Nigeria is also a multilingual nation with rich cultural diversity. Mother tongue instruction, therefore, promotes cultural identity, pride, and continuity by connecting children to their heritage."
