Children are innocent, lovely creatures who capture the hearts of many with their innocent smiles and joyful spirits. It's no surprise that a day has been set aside to honor them.

Children's Day, observed annually on May 27 in Nigeria, is dedicated to honoring children all over the world and allowing adults to reflect on their own childhood experiences.

Here are five things to keep in mind when it comes to Children's Day celebrations.

 • Origin

Children's Day was first observed in 1857 in the United States of America when a specific Pastor Charles Leonard hosted a service for children at his church.

The service became known as Children's Day in the community.

Following that, similar festivities honoring children began to appear in various parts of the globe.

On April 23, 1920, Turkey was the first country to commemorate International Children's Day. The International Children's Day was established on June 1, 1925, during the World Conference on the Welfare of Children.

On November 20th, the United Nations International Day of the Child is commemorated.

On November 20, 1954, the United Nations General Assembly approved the concept of a Universal Children's Day.

On the same day in 1959, the United Nations General Assembly enacted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and on November 20, 1989, the formal decree protecting children's rights was founded.

 • Children’s Day differs from country to country

Despite the fact that the United Nations designated November 20 as Children's Day, the day is observed on different dates in different countries.

In Nigeria, the Children's Holiday is celebrated on May 27. Children's Day is celebrated in China on June 1, in Japan on May 5, and in the United Kingdom on August 20.

 • The Celebration's Importance

Despite the fact that it is not a national holiday in Nigeria, the day is set aside to honor the younger generation, and elementary and secondary school students are given the day off.

Children's Day aims to recognize that all minors and children have the right to health, education, and protection, in addition to the festivities and celebrations.

 • Activities on Children’s Day

On Children's Day, a variety of social activities are held, including excursions, parties, funfairs, parades, and so on.

The majority of these activities take place at unique venues such as stadiums, amusement parks, and other famous locations.

Some government agencies, media outlets, and non-governmental organizations use the day to reach out to children and provide assistance in a variety of ways.

On this day, parents honor their children by giving them gifts, taking them on outings, and treating them to a special treat.
