For failing to comply with the necessary COVID-19 protocols for travellers, the federal government on Tuesday, February 9, announced it has sanctioned not less than 100 passports.

This disclosure was made by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in a tweet, with the body saying the step was taken to ensure total compliance with the mandatory COVID-19 measures.

PTF also announced that as part of the penalty, the affected passports have been slammed with a 6-month travel restriction starting from Friday, February 5, and ending on July 30, 2021.

It would be recalled that since the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the federal government has intensified efforts in ensuring that travellers comply with some protocols in order to curb the spread of the deadly infection.

On Sunday, January 10, the COVID-19 PTF, through a communique, announced 32 guidelines for travellers willing to come to Nigeria.

Part of the guidelines read:

"All passengers arriving in Nigeria will be required to go through the routine Port Health screening and present electronic or print-out evidence of preboarding COVID-19 PCR test and the Permit to Travel Certificate/QR Code."

Nigeria presently has 140,391 total cases of COVID-19 after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 643 new cases on Monday, February 8.
