A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to reopen and prosecute alleged financial crimes involving former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Through his lawyer, Hannibal Uwaifo (SAN), Agbonayinma gave the anti-graft agency 14 days to act on the request or face possible legal action. The petition, dated August 27 and received by the EFCC on September 1, references an EFCC investigation conducted between 2005 and 2006 during Atiku's tenure as Vice President.

According to the petition, a September 2006 EFCC report allegedly contained findings relating to corruption, money laundering, and other financial crimes. The former lawmaker also cited a 2010 report by a United States Senate subcommittee, which he claims raised similar allegations. He is urging the EFCC to reactivate both reports and consider them as the basis for renewed investigation and possible prosecution.

Agbonayinma argued that revisiting the matter would demonstrate the EFCC's commitment to fighting corruption without regard to political status. His lawyers warned that if the commission fails to respond within the stipulated 14-day period, legal proceedings may be initiated against the agency.

It is important to note that these remain allegations, and no court has established criminal liability against Atiku Abubakar in relation to the claims referenced in the petition.
