A 21-year-old bartender, Timothy Taiwo, on Friday appeared in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing N119,000 from his employer.

Taiwo, who resides in the Onipan area of Lagos, was charged theft.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecution counsel, ASP Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at 11 p.m. on Jan. 9, at Team-Swag bar, at No. 47, Oluwadare str., Shomolu, Lagos.

Nurudeen said the defendant has worked for the complainant, Mr Emmanuel Bassey, for just one month.

He alleged that the defendant absconded with the N119,000.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Section 287 (7) prescribes a seven-year jail term upon conviction for stealing from one’s employer.

Chief Magistrate K.B. Ayeye admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ayeye ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until April 29 for mention.
