Alleged Cultural Appropriation: Lagos govt probing Uzo Njoku - TYF

A Yoruba socio-political group, Think Yoruba First (TYF), has said the Lagos State Government is investigating US-based artist, Uzo Njoku, following allegations of plagiarism and cultural appropriation against her.

TYF General Secretary, Dr. Bukola Adeniji, revealed this in a statement following a meeting between TYF and the Lagos State Ministry of Culture and Tourism

The meeting was convened to address the ongoing case of cultural appropriation of Yoruba heritage, specifically the unauthorized commercial use and misrepresentation of Yoruba Adìrẹ fabric and the Yoruba cultural expression of Òwanbẹ, by Ms. Uzo.

Adeniji said TYF sought clarification from the Ministry on the government’s stance and possible protective measures for Yoruba cultural heritage.

At the meeting, TYF emphasized the cultural, historical, and economic significance of Adìrẹ and Òwanbẹ in Yoruba society.

The organization underscored that misrepresentation or appropriation undermines Yoruba identity and erodes the cultural value system.

The organization emphasized the need for Lagos State to frame its cultural identity explicitly as Yoruba Culture—instead of the diluted term “Lagos Culture".

Adeniji said in response, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism assured TYF that Ms. Uzo is currently under investigation for cultural appropriation.

"The Ministry confirmed that several other stakeholders have equally expressed deep concern regarding this issue.

"It was further assured that the matter will receive due attention and be handled with seriousness to protect Yoruba cultural heritage.

"The Ministry welcomed TYF’s advocacy efforts and emphasized the importance of partnerships in safeguarding indigenous cultural expressions.

"TYF reaffirmed its readiness to continue working with Lagos State in developing stronger cultural protection frameworks, policies, and awareness campaigns.

"The meeting ended on a constructive note, with Lagos State Ministry of Culture and Tourism giving assurances that the cultural appropriation case is under active review and will be addressed responsibly. TYF reiterated its commitment to defend Yoruba heritage and to serve as a strong voice against any form of cultural erosion or exploitation," Adeniji said.
