Legendary Nollywood actor Chief Pete Edochie has reflected on the extreme public reactions he faced during the height of his career, revealing how viewers frequently confused his villainous film characters with his real-life personality.
Speaking at the launch of his legacy project, the veteran performer recalled several disturbing encounters where fans confronted and cursed at him in public following his intense portrayals on screen.
Edochie recounted a dramatic incident following his breakout role as Okonkwo in the television adaptation of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, when a fellow passenger in a taxi launched an unexpected tirade against him.
"I met a lady in a taxi after I did the movie Things Fall Apart, then she started cursing me. She was raining curses on me. I was wondering how I hurt this lady.
"She believed it was real, so she told me that God would punish me... In fact, it was raining, she asked the taxi driver to stop, came out of the taxi, and the rain was beating her mercilessly while she stood there cursing me," Edochie said.
The veteran actor shared another harrowing encounter involving a young girl who approached him at a public gathering after watching him portray a antagonist in another production.
"A girl of about 10 years left her seat, came and stood in front of me, looked at me and said, ‘Are you a good man?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ She said, ‘You are not a good man, you are a very bad man; you kill children,’" he recalled.
Edochie admitted that the child's raw confrontation deeply unsettled him, forcing him to exit the event prematurely.
"Oh, my God. In fact, I left that occasion. There are many; I don’t want to talk about all of them," he added.
Considered one of Africa's most accomplished screen icons, Edochie rose to international prominence in 1987 for his portrayal of Okonkwo in NTA's Things Fall Apart adaptation and went on to establish himself as a towering figure in Nollywood, frequently cast as stern patriarchs, traditional rulers, and formidable villains.
