Muhammadu Buhari is the current President of Nigeria. He is a retired general of the Nigerian Army who was elected into the seat of power in 2015. Prior to him assuming his role as president, Buhari served as Head of State between 1983 to 1985 after taking power in a military coup.

His rise in the political scene in Nigerian was meteoric. After he was enrolled at age 19 in the Nigerian Military Training College, at 20 he was commissioned a second lieutenant and appointed Platoon Commander of the Second Infantry Battalion in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

Political Career

President Buhari’s political career has taken a topsy turvy turn. From a known military ruler he decided to run for president of Nigeria in 2003, 2007, and 2011. He was only successful in 2015 after he defeated the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

He became the first president to defeat an incumbent president in the history of the elections in Nigeria. He was sworn in on 29 May 2015. In February 2019, Buhari was reelected, defeating his closest rival Atiku Abubakar by over 3 million votes.
