Austin Eguavoen, born on August 19, 1965, in Sapele, Nigeria, is a revered figure in Nigerian football history. His journey in the world of football began in his youth, where his exceptional talent and passion for the sport quickly became evident. Eguavoen's skills as a defender earned him recognition, leading to his debut for the Nigerian national team in 1986, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.

Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Eguavoen played a pivotal role in Nigeria's football success, representing his country in numerous international competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup. His leadership qualities and defensive prowess contributed significantly to Nigeria's triumph in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, a historic moment for Nigerian football.

Following his illustrious playing career, Eguavoen transitioned into coaching, driven by a desire to impart his knowledge and passion for the game. He embarked on a coaching journey that saw him take charge of various Nigerian football clubs and the Nigerian national team. Eguavoen was appointed as interim coach for the Super Eagles in December 2021 following the sacking of longest-serving coach Gernot Rohr. He led Nigeria at the 2021 Nations Cup in Cameroon where the three-time African champions exited the competition at the round of 16 after recording a brilliant hundred percent record in the group stages. He later resigned and returned to his role as the technical director after Nigeria lost the 2022 FIFA World Cup ticket to archrivals Ghana in the double-header qualifiers.
