Manchester United would have to part ways with a hefty fee if they are to dismiss Erik ten Hag, according to reports.

After their worst start to a league season since 1986, the Dutch manager finds himself under immense pressure to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Some pressure was taken off ten Hag after three successive wins across all competitions, but it all came rushing back after the Red Devils succumbed to a 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City in the derby.

Ten Hag has since sent a message to Manchester United fans, saying as per Fabrizio Romano: "While this has not been the start to the season we all hoped for, I am certain that we have the talent and attitude as a collective to move in the right direction. I continue to believe in these players and I am confident we will improve after a difficult start to the season."

Based on how things are going at Old Trafford, it is not difficult to envision a scenario where ten Hag is dismissed.

It has happened before, with top class managers at the club like Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and more recently, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But the decision to sack ten Hag would have a hefty financial implication on United, as the Daily Mirror reports the club would have to part ways with £15 million.

This would be a record payout for United, who paid a similar amount to Jose Mourinho when they sacked the Portuguese tactician in 2018.

United host Newcastle United in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, November 1, in a game where ten Hag will surely have little margin for error.
