Nigeria will open its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against unfamiliar opponent, Tanzania, on Tuesday, December 23.

This will be the first competitive fixture after the team failed to qualify for the World Cup.

They will look to bounce back from the disappointment and win their fourth continental title.

This is the first time both teams are facing each other since 1980.

The Taifa Stars are making their fifth appearance at the AFCON, while Nigeria finished as runners-up in the last edition.

Head coach, Eric Chelle opted for Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali in goal, cementing his status as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper while Bright Osayi-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi as full-backs.

Regulars Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi will feature as centre-backs.

Newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi will pair Alex Iwobi in midfield.

Victor Osimhen will lead a four-man attack that includes Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze and Adams Akor.
